Kombustor's artifact scanner with RDNA 3 GPUs 7900 xt(x)

Kombustor 4.1.20.0 reports artifacts on both RDNA 3 cards 7900xtx and a 7900 xt. This seems to happen only on the (GL) MSI-01 test after running from anywhere from 20 minutes but can sometimes take up to 2 hours. Artifacts detected is normally in the low double digits range.

Since my sample size is only two cards (1 7900xtx and 1 7900xt) it's not totally clear if there is a bug with Kombustor (or the AMD driver) or if if there is a slight defect in these 2 cards.

Can anyone else who has these cards confirm if you can run this test without any artifacts?

I'm going to do some tests on a RX 7900 XT to see if there's a bug in the artifact scanner...

Thanks for investigating! I'll provide a some more details that should help you.

Exact cards tested:
7900 XTX - PowerColor Red Devil ‎(model: RX7900XTX 24G-E/OC)(possibly was bad)

• This passed OCCT tests (1 hour each) and ~8 hours of memtest_vulkan
• Games: AMD driver crashes in games such as Edlen Ring (every ~1 hour) and Halo Wars 2 (every ~30 min). Halo Infinite did get an AMD driver crash once, but only after ~8 hours total of game play.
• This could may have been bad, since I did get AMD driver crashes in the games above.
• I returned the card so I no longer have this one

7900 XT - ‎ASRock Phantom (model: RX7900XT PG 20GO):(good so far, but also new)

• This passed OCCT tests (1 hour each) and ~5 minutes of memtest_vulkan (it seems to have a bug with this card that only uses ~4GB of RAM)
• Games: ~8 hours so far on Halo Infinite (have yet to play Edlen Ring and Halo Wars 2)
• No signs this card is bad so far (other than the Kombustor artifacts of course)
• I recently got this card (2023-03-22) and still have it.

I have been able to reproduce Kombustor artifacts with:
7900xtx:

• Stock settings for card
• max underclock 500mhz to 600mhz
• Windows 11 and 10
• Two different test benches; each with a different PSU, Mobo, CPU, etc
• AMD Drivers; 23.2.1, 23.2.2

7900xt:

• Stock settings for card
• max underclock 500mhz to 600mhz
  
  • This takes longer to find artifacts, about 3 hours or so.
• Windows 10 (haven't tried Windows 11 yet)
• Only tested one system (can try my other test bench if you like)
• AMD Drivers; 23.3.2 (Only tested this driver version, can try others if you need)

I launched the same kind of test (ASUS TUF RX 7900 XT) with GPU underclocked at 600 MHz...

Indeed, I found 3 artifacts after around one hour.

Second test: RX 7900 XT with Rage settings.
Third test: RTX 4070 Ti with stock settings.

Interesting you were able to reproduce the issue with an RTX 4070 Ti. I thought maybe this was an RDNA 3 issue only. I do not have access to any 2000, 3000, or 4000 series Nvidia cards to confirm.


I also tested these cards and they do NOT show any artifacts, I ran them for ~8 hours:
* stock Nvidia GTX 1080
* stock AMD RX 570 4GB

No no, sorry, but second and third tests weren't done when I wrote the message...

I tested the RX 7900 XT yesterday and the RTX 4070 TI today.

- RX 7900 XT: I got one artifact after 30 min of scanning (at res 1920x1080).

- RTX 4070 Ti: no artifact after two hours of scanning.


I will try to test with a RX 6800 XT asap.

I tested a RX 7900 XTX: 12 artifacts after 40 min.

I tested a RX 6800 XT: no artifact after two hours.

The RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX have Hynix memory.
The RX 6800 XT has Samsung memory and the RTX 4070 Ti has Micron memory.

Is this a bug Kombustor can fix? Or is this a bug with AMD's GPU driver this uncovered?
