Magus ex Machina is an animated movie that has been developed with a realtime 3D engine: Unigine. Unigine is not an unknown 3D engine since it’s behind the tech demo Tropics.
With today’s GPUs, we can build really powerful 3D rendering engine that can compete with ray-tracing systems. And the most important advantage of using a 3D engine in such a production is the development time: visual feedback is produced in realtime.
