Quick GPU Benchmark: Shadertoy Rainforest

Shadertoy Rainforest - GeeXLab demo

Here is a quick graphics benchmark of a recent Shadertoy demo: Rainforest. This multipass demo has been ported to GeeXLab by Stefan and is available in the code sample pack in the gl-21/shadertoy-multipass/gl21-rainforest/ folder.

How to run the demo?
1/ Download GeeXLab + the code sample pack and unzip both archives.
2/ On Windows, launch GeeXLab, and drag and drop into GeeXLab the {code_sample_pack}/gl-21/shadertoy-multipass/gl21-rainforest/demo.xml file.
3/ On Linux (not tested but should run), edit the demo.sh file and update the /demofile option with the correct path+filename.
4/ On macOS (not tested but should run): same thing than Windows.

Here are some results with different graphics cards. The bench test:

– CPU: Intel Core i5 6600K @ 3.5GHz
– Motherboard: ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming
– Memory: 8GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance LPX @ 2666MHz
– PSU: Corsair AX860i
– Software: Windows 10 64-bit + NVIDIA R376.09 / Crimson 16.12.1

The score is the max FPS during the first 60 seconds… The resolution of the demo is 800×480 in windowed mode.

98 FPS – ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 Strix – R376.09
70 FPS – EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 FTW – R376.09
54 FPS – MSI Radeon RX 470 – Crimson 16.12.1
50 FPS – EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC – R376.09
48 FPS – MSI Radeon R9 290X – Crimson 16.12.1
43 FPS – MSI GeForce GTX 970 – R376.09

This was a really helpful tutorial. The rainforest imagery is amazing, I can definitely see why it is the benchmark. I had no idea that graphics cards could have such a significant impact on your results! Thanks for sharing.

Looks pretty, but not good enough to be so demanding. Just shows how illusionary graphics card power still is.
