Python 2.7 Available

Python script language

A new version of Python has been released few time ago. Python 2.7 should be the last major version of Python 2.x branch and contains many of the features that were first released in Python 3.1.

Windows Downloads:

According to their schedule, a final version of Python 2.6.6 should be released on August 16 2010…

GeeXLab will be updated with this new version very shortly.

I just added Python news feed in my RSS reader so next news about Python should be a bit fresher 😉

Python 2 is *not* obsolete. Python 2.7 is *still* a very reasonable choice for many, if not most, new Python projects.

This is because many major third-party libraries have still not been ported to Python 3, so anyone using Python 3 will be unable to use those libraries.

The transition to Python 3 by users, starting with libraries, then frameworks and applications, is expected to take years.

Many of the new features of Python3 have been backported to 2.7 where it makes sense, so it isn’t missing out on too much.
