ATI Catalyst 9.2: Three New OpenGL Extensions And Yes, FurMark 1.6.0 Works Fine Now!

Here is the list of OpenGL extensions exposed by the graphics driver Catalyst 9.2 for a Radeon HD 4850 under Windows XP SP2 32-bit.

Compared to Catalyst 9.1, Catalyst 9.2 introduces three new OpenGL extensions:

WGL_AMDX_gpu_association has no documentation (google returns 1 result on geeks3d, yahoo returns 0 result…). I think this extension has the same role than NVIDIA’s WGL_NV_gpu_affinity: an application can bind an OpenGL render context to a specific GPU (when several GPUs are present). But AMD extension differs from NVIDIA one by the fact it’s available on gamer video cards while WGL_NV_gpu_affinity is present only on professional cards (Quadro). But I have to stop now. Maybe I’m totally wrong…

Catalyst 9.2 supports OpenGL 3.0 and fixes the glGetString(GL_VERSION) bug when an OpenGL 3.0 context is used (see here for details). I successfully ran FurMark 1.6.0 with Catalyst 9.2.

Catalyst 9.2 + GPU Caps Viewer


All GPU Caps Viewer‘s tech demos work well on a Radeon HD 4850 + Catalyst 9.2.

Catalyst 9.2, like all Catalyst from 8.8 still slow down the GPU when FurMark is detected (see here and here for more detail). But a Geeks3D’s reader posted an interesting comment: disabling Catalyst A.I allow to bypass the protection. I tested and it’s true. Catalyst protection against FurMark is done by Catalyst A.I.

The GLSL string version returned by Catalyst is still wrong when an OpenGL 3.0 context is used. SHould be 1.30 in place of 1.20.
