HIS Radeon HD 4850 Review

I took the time this morming to publish the test of HIS’s Radeon HD 4850 I started on month ago. I must say that Radeon HD 4850 shows high OpenGL performances and as always, vertex processing is incredibly fast (see surface deformer benchmark). At idle, GPU temperature is around 70°C while under load the temperature reaches 93°C (3-minute test with GPU Caps Viewer burner).

RSX Reality Synthesizer, the PS3’s GPU

This Inno3D GeForce 9800 GT Twin Turbo comes with an Arctic Cooling (Accelero) based cooling solution to keep temperatures down and graphics card quiet. Idle temperature is 45°C and loading temperature is 65°C. The card is available for around $150.-

Overall, a very lovely product which we can definitely recommend, the next best thing for you would be the GeForce 9800 GTX+ or Radeon HD 4850 which are slightly more expensive.

Real-time Shadow Algorithms and Techniques Collection

NVIDIA has done a great job for all 3D graphics developers: a collection of NVIDIA’s key presentations, code samples, demo programs, and whitepapers on the topic of shadowing under one page, giving developers a broad resource covering everything from the latest on cascaded shadow maps and real-time ambient occlusion to the basic principles of stencil shadowing and hardware-accelerated percentage-closer filtering.

Equalizer is an open source project providing a minimally invasive programming interface and resource management system for parallel, scalable OpenGL applications.

Zhu3D: An interactive OpenGL Mathematical Function Viewer

Zhu3D is an interactive OpenGL-based mathematical function viewer. You can visualize functions, parametric systems and isosurfaces. The viewer supports special effects like animation, morphing, transparency, textures, fog and motion blur.

Zhu3D runs under Linux/Unix, Windows XP-Vista and Mac OS X (the graphical user interface – GUI – uses Qt) and supports different CPU’s as well as different API’s like KDE, Gnome or Motiv. Isosurface calculation currently supports up to 16 CPU-threads.

GLEE 5.3.2 Adds OpenGL 3.0 Extensions Support

GLee (GL Easy Extension library) is a free cross-platform extension loading library for OpenGL. It provides seamless support for OpenGL functions up to version 3.0 and 398 extensions.

GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 vs ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB

What to choose between NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 and ATI Radeon HD 4870 1Gb? In a word, if you need antialiasing in high resolution, the Radeon HD 4870 1Gb is the right choice. if you don’t need AA, choose the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 because performances without AA are better. In the side of power consumption and noise, the GeForce has the advantage.
